Learning Guide 5.1: Setting the Stage- Pre-Module

With this guide, learners will:

  • Identify the challenges practitioners face when working with familes to promote family-centeredness, family capacity building, and encourage positive parent-professional relationships.

Students will meet Sherry, an early interventionist who is just beginning to work with Laura and Robert and their son Simon who has Down Syndrome. Sherry is looking for ways to build trusting relationships with the Laura and Robert, as well as build the capacity of the family.

With this guide, learners will:

  • Review family profiles and, with a small group, identify the family’s circumstances, brainstorm ways to involve the family members in decision-making, and identify strategies that will build relationships and increase competence and confidence for the family.

  • Identify the strengths, resources, and needs of the families in their care and the specific strategies they will use to build capacity and collaboration.

With this guide, learners will:

  • Identify strategies and considerations that will help inform their practice for working with children and families from special populations.

Practitioners and family leaders share their expertise and perspectives on engaging and supporting families.

Learning Guide 5.6: Scenario-Based Activity

This guide contains a set of five simulations/scenarios that can be used in place of, or in addition to, the online simulation.

With this guide, learners will:

  • Practice engaging with families to support parents to participate fully in all decision-making activities and support parents' confidence and competence.
  • Apply what they have learned about family practices.

With this guide, learners will:

  • Reframe statements about families to reflect an anti-bias viewpoint.
  • Reflect on implicit bias and its impact on their practice.

Learning Guide 5.8: Performance Feedback Guide

This guide can be used in class when learners are engaged in role-plays or scenario-based activities. Also, this guide can be used when supervising learners in early childhood settings with children.

Module 5 Family Practice Profile describes example behaviors of practitioners that are associated with each DEC Recommended Practice along a continuum of expected/proficient behaviors to developmental behaviors and unacceptable behaviors.

With this guide, learners will:

  • Reflect on changes in their knowledge and comfort level in working with families and use knowledge gained from Module 5: Family content to answer a practice dilemma.
